(3-7-11) - NH LEGION BASEBALL GOING WOODEN BAT 2012

Following our New England neighbor Rhode Island which changed to a wooden bat league this year, a unanimous committee vote has changed the face of Legion Baseball in NH starting in 2012. Both the Senior and Junior American Legion Baseball programs will become a wooden bat league. The decision was passed along to our baseball teams during the 2011 scheduling meeting held on 3-6-11 at Post 48 in Hudson, NH. Managers and coaches seemed generally excited by this announcement! One question was brought up by a coach and will be addressed in the fall meeting of 2011. The committee will investigate on whether it will also allow composite wooden bats as well a the normal wooden bat. If allowed, it might help with the cost factor of wooden bats and the breaking of wood bats.

(1-5-11) - NEW TEAM ADDED

The Junior Division of the NH Legion Baseball Program has added one more team for the summer 2011 season. Lebanon has submitted a team to the Junior program for the 2011 season. A decision on its' district assignment will be forthcoming. Thanks to Leabanon for it's new junior entry! Also, the deadline for submitting a new team into the Junior program for the 2011 season will be January 17, 2011. After this date, all teams both junior and senior should consider to start making their phone calls and creating their district schedule for the 2011 season. Your district schedule should be completed before our scheduling meeting to be held on March 6, 2011. Thank you. Rick Harvey - Junior Director

(12-18-10) - NEW TEAMS ADDED

The NH Legion Baseball Program has added two new teams for the summer 2011 season. The Junior program will add Windham which will be in District B. The senior division has added Raymond to District A-1 for the 2011 season. We welcome all new entries to our program. Rick Harvey - Junior Director

TWO JUNIOR DISTRICTS FORMED - UPDATED, TEAM ADDED

The Junior Division of the NH Legion Baseball Program has grown from 9 teams in 2009 to 15 teams for the 2010 summer season. Because of our growth, a Junior District A and Junior District B has been created. We have tried to create two balanced districts and have also taken into consideration travel distances. Please see the links on our website to see how our Posts have been assigned. They have been re-arranged since my first posting on 1-5-10 This year because of the short season, we will play either a 12 or 14 game district schedule, depending on the district your are in. That is, play each team in our own division twice. Playing an 18 game schedule would be too much in a short 5 week season considering the possibility of rain-outs. To make your season longer, feel free to play non-districts games with the other division. Our state tournament format has also changed (please see that link) with our growth. We will follow the same format as the Senior Division with the top four teams in each district making the tournament and playing a cross-over format in the tournament. Rick Harvey - Junior Director

MANDATORY TEAM MEETING

There will be a mandatory meeting on January 9, 2010 at Hudson Post 48 at 10:00 am. At least on representative for each NH Legion team both Junior and Senior should attend. Ideally, the person who will be responsible for the on-line registration process for teams should attend. We will be giving a live demonstration of the new on-line registration process. Understanding this new process will go a long way of having an easy time registering your team for 2010. Remember, on-line will be the ONLY way your team will be recognized for the 2010 season and beyond. These is no more paper registration for fees, Form 1's, submitting team pictures or insurance.

ON-LINE REGISTRATION MANDATE FROM NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS

Gentlemen,
Hope this web post finds you all doing well. Gary Webster and I attended the National Legion baseball meeting in Indianapolis last weekend. We learned of one important event that will affect all teams nationally starting in 2010. That is a new on-line registration program. Here are some highlights: Your registration that you normally would fill out and send to Gary or Jay will now be done on-line. This will be for both senior and junior teams. Your registration fees for each team will be sent to the national directly. You can only use a credit card for that process. Once that step is completed, you will then be able to register on-line for your insurances. Your fees will be paid with a credit card for this step too. Please be advised that none of these forms will be mailed hard copy like in the past. Only on-line availability. Once both those steps are complete, you will be considered a registered team. Your Form 1 will be done on line. Your pictures will be sent on line. The only hard copies you will have is your Form 2's, 76's and 77's. You must download a blank copy and fill out as usual for each player on both the Senior and Junior team. If a player is dual rostered, you must have a Form 2 for each team. These must be signed by parents as usual. Social Security numbers are to be the last four digits only. These are important in case a player is injured and needs hospital services. If none of the above is complete (except picture) by the start of the season, you will not be able to put your team on the field. Deadline dates for each part of this process will be given in the future. We hope to have a workshop/meeting of all board members and a representative from each team (the one responsible to fill out this paperwork) when this program goes on-line along with the new National Legion Website. We were told this would happen in early November. It is imperative that a member of each team or Post attend this important meeting as we will do a step by step power point or live session of how to go about filling out this new paperwork process. Please check the website bulletin board and we will also send along in an email the date of this meeting. Understand this is mandatory from the National Headquarters, we have no choice but to abide by this decision. Thanks for your time, Rick Harvey - Web Admin.

PLYMOUTH TO HAVE A "NON-DISTRICT" JUNIOR TEAM IN 2009

Plymouth is in the process of putting together a Junior team for the 2009 season. Because of its late entry, the team will not be part of our district schedule, but they are interested in putting together a "non-district" schedule this year. They hope by trying this out this year, they can install a permanent Junior team into our program next year. If you recall, Plymouth was part of our inaugural year, but had to disband last minute last year because of small numbers. Ward Scott is diligently working at trying to get the numbers up this year, advertise the Junior Program with the hopes of becoming a permanent team in years to come. If you wish to schedule some more games for your teams in the Junior Program, points of contact are General Manager Ward Scott at Cell: 603-738-9028 and Asst. Coach Joe George, e-mail: joegeorge9@yahoo.com, Cell: 860-922-9751. NH Legion Chairman Gary Webster has given the okay to proceed this way this year with the hope of a permanent Junior team forming from Plymouth for the future.

Bedford re-joined the Legion baseball program last year with a Junior team and won the Junior Legion state title in its first year of existence. CONCORD DISBANDS JUNIOR TEAM

We have received word from Averill Cate of the Concord Legion Program that they will not field a Junior Legion team in the 2009 season. 2009 STATE MEETING SCHEDULED

The annual Department of NH American Legion Baseball State meeting will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2009. It will be held at Keene Post 4, our host for the 2009 State Tournament. Post 4 is located at 797 Court Street........head towards the hospital, about 1/2 mile further. The Baseball Committee meeting will be held at 9:00, and the scheduling meeting around noon. All teams (Seniors and Juniors) should have at least one representative at this meeting. It would be beneficial to all to have your district schedules completed before this meeting! Thank you.

ENROLLMENT SIGNATURES NOT NEEDED

In an official announcement from Legion Baseball National Chairman Jim Quinlan, the following message was conveyed: Coaches will NO longer be required to obtain the signature of school officials to certify school enrollments as of March 31. School enrollments are public records and are available from the Department of Education in each state. Nearly every school enrollment can also be found on the internet. On or before March 31, each Department Chairman will be required to forward a copy of school enrollments to the National Office. If a protest is filed challenging the enrollment, we will use the documentation filed by the Department. Several Chairman currently use this procedure in their departments. The Chairman obtains a copy of all the schools in the state and the enrollments. He then sends that information to each registered team. The team manager then lists the school(s) and enrollments provided by the chairman. This new procedure eliminates driving to your school(s) for signatures!

MAPQUEST - NEW OFFICIAL LEGION BASEBALL MAPPING PROGRAM

MapQuest will be now used to determine the nearest team for potential players. MapQuest allows you to determine the shortest distance vs. the shortest time. You must check the directions box and check the "shortest distance" option. All legion teams should now be able to calculate non base school players eligibility for their own team.

STATE MEETING HELD ON 10-18-08

The annual fall Department of New Hampshire American Legion Baseball board meeting was held on October 18, 2008 at Post 48 in Hudson, NH. Merrimack has withdrawn its Senior program for the 2009 season and Plaistow has added a team to the Senior program for the 2009 season. It is important to read the following meeting minutes to find about the new Senior Division alignments, important season date deadlines and tournament information. Click here for minutes of that meeting.

PLYMOUTH DISBANDS JUNIOR TEAM

We thank Ward Scott and all his helpers with their efforts to field a Plymouth Junior team this year. But due to a lack of players, they will have to disband their team for 2008. All other teams should wipe the two Plymouth games off their schedules. The Junior schedule will now consist of 14 district games on the regular season schedule. Again thanks to Ward for his efforts and we hope we will see them back next year.

RULE CLARIFICATION - FIELDING LESS THAN NINE PLAYERS

The Junior and Senior program follow the same rule when: If a team is unable to put nine players on the field it will forfeit the game. See rule 4.17 in the 2008 official rules of MLB. This also includes once game has started and you have used all the players on your bench, one player gets hurt and is unable to continue, that team will have to forfeit.

KEENE FORMS JUNIOR TEAM

Keene has entered a team into the Junior Legion Program. Please contact Harold Secore, the Keene Senior Team manager to schedule your games. This now brings a total of nine teams to our Junior program for the 2008 season.

HELMET UPDATE

E-mail from Jay Hunnewell 1-3-08: For the 2008 season, coaches on the playing field will be mandated by the National Organization to wear protective headgear. Coaches will wear a helmet with either a single, double or no flap helmet while in the coaches box. Helmet must be uniform in color and consistent with what the rest of the team wears. If your team wears red hats with blue E on it, the helmet will also be red with a blue E on it. He suggests that orders should be placed soon because the non-flap skull caps will bill are hard to find. This article from USA today during General Managers meetings of 2007. MLB GMs: Base coaches must wear helmets in 2008 - ORLANDO (AP) General managers decided Thursday that first and third-base coaches will wear some sort of head protection during games next season, an action taken four months after Mike Coolbaugh was killed when he was struck in the neck by a line drive. Coolbaugh, a former major leaguer and a coach for the Colorado Rockies' minor league team in Tulsa, died July 22 when he was hit as he stood in the first-base coach's box during a Texas League game at Arkansas. Some major league coaches started wearing helmets the rest of the season. "There was a sentiment that as a concept this was a good idea," said Joe Garagiola Jr., senior vice president for baseball operations in the commissioner's office. GMs will decide on the exact form of protection when they meet next month at the winter meetings. "We're going to come back in Nashville with some options: liners, hard caps, helmets without flaps, helmets with flaps," Garagiola said. While no formal vote was taken, Garagiola said the sentiment of the GMs was clear. "Everybody just felt it was a situation that made sense," Detroit Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said. Many batters started wearing helmets after Ray Chapman, a shortstop for the Cleveland Indians, was killed when he was hit by a pitch during a game in 1920. A rule requiring helmets for batters was adopted in 1971. "If you think about the evolution of the batting helmet, unfortunately what ended up happening this year is essentially what happened with Ray Chapman," Oakland general manager Billy Beane said. "I think we need to come up with a recommendation." Garagiola said the recommendation adopted by the GMs next month will not need additional approvals.
